Creative Inspirations For March
This week I wanted to write about some work and other sources that have been inspiring for different reasons or another!
Rascal
This month I have subscribed to Rascal, which is a gaming discourse and news site. The recent articles have been really informative about the industry at large. For the last couple of months I have been listening to Thomas Manuel’s Reading Club. The discussion of GM sources has been inspiring and helps me dive deeper into my practice as a GM. This has started me off thinking I would love to do something similar!
Mothership TTRPG
On the topic of the last podcast, Mothership was recommended and analyzed. I bought the core set and have loved what I’ve read so far. The game has lots of interesting mechanics that facilitate the theme of Horror. The GM guide is super good, and the graphic design is inspiring. I look forward to playing it and reporting back!
Australian Yarn Show
This weekend I travelled to Canberra to see some yarn and thread creatives! My partner is super into knitting and crochet, and it was great to see her in her element. The thing that surprised me the most was the inspiration I took from it. The colours, designs and seeing people being very creative, was all very inspiring for me. While it’s not my art form, I’ve grown to be inspired by all things around me and this was a great example of that.
Miami Vice
I have been watching the 80s classic. The show has such cool police procedural vibes that hold up (mostly). The visuals and the production values are off the charts. Michael Mann was onto a winner here for sure. I’ve been loving the Jan Hammer soundtrack and found myself listening to it throughout the day. The gnarly synth waves mash with the cinematic strangeness. It is “wavy” and a precursor to other great tv soundtracks like the X Files or CSI.
Evan’s Design Vlogs - Nimble Co
With the latest kickstarter wrapping up for the Nimble TTRPG expansion, Evan has been doing some streams where he talks all things design. The toggles he has in his design are pretty interesting to see in action. It’s been inspiring seeing him commit to the principles of his design. This often takes the form of simple clear text and fast action resolution. Tactical but not fiddly.
Country music - Zach Bryan and Morgan Evans
From the Australian to American, I’ve been listening to a bunch of Country music. These two artists have stood out to me. Their lyrics and simple genre call backs have been helping me get through a busy month. It’s nice to reflect on how this sort of music impacts me. The vibes sit right.
